If you, like me, can’t even begin to fathom the idea of a summer without the Winchesters (especially with the bitter taste the last episode left in my mouth), give The Unholy Cause a try. Castiel (who, in the book, is called “Cass,” a spelling I hadn’t seen before) I found a little over the top, but that could be because I’m more used to the human version of Cas in the very last few episodes, where this was obviously before he lost his angel mojo. Sam was still moody and too quick to trust, Dean was still a wealth of pop culture references and insults for his brother. Let’s get to the important stuff: was this really Sam and Dean fighting the good fight, or did the author miss the mark on characterization? Most of the time I had no trouble hearing one of the boys make any of the comments. That being said, it still wasn’t hard to imagine this as an episode.īut enough about the action. And this one, involving massive armies, multiple car crashes and explosions, and ancient Civil War machinery, would certainly fit that description. My theory on these books is that all the storylines written for the show but are deemed too costly to film get relegated to novel form. Replica weapons have begun firing, soldiers on the same side have begun turning on each other, and at the center of it all is a famed soldier by the name of Jubal Beauchamp with some decidedly demonic connections. Sam and Dean travel to Georgia to the site of a Civil War reenactment where things have gone horribly awry.

Also, to be transported to a… erm… happier time. This was the firs of the Supernatural novels I had read, but with the fifth season ending just weeks ago, I was already jonesing for a fix from the Winchester brothers. I recently was lucky enough to be offered a copy of the latest Supernatural novel The Unholy Cause, written by Joe Schreiber.
